Masayuki Maki obtained his doctoral degree in historical keyboard performance from Stony Brook University, specializing in the harpsichord. He works as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Queens College, the City University of New York (CUNY), teaching the harpsichord, organ, fortepiano, and baroque performance practice. He also coaches chamber music groups and the baroque ensemble. He is on keyboard faculty with Catskill Mountain Foundation's Academy of Fortepiano Performance where he teaches performance on the historical keyboard instruments and provides training on their maintenance. He is also the Associate Director of Rethinking Bach: An International Performers' Workshop. As an educator, he encourages students to be curious about composers, reflect on the treatises or remarks made by the composers, and apply their own understanding to their playing.
Hosted by the Catskill Mountain Foundation Piano Performance Museum in Hunter, NY, The Academy of Fortepiano Performance is a perfect introduction for pianists who have an interest in playing early instruments, as well as an intensive study opportunity for experienced students of period performance practice. Students will have plentiful access to pianos from the 18th and 19th century or their modern replicas. The Academy also offers a workshop on maintaining historical keyboard instruments.
The Rethinking Bach Workshop highlights Bach interpretation, based on leading-edge research that has revolutionized modern understanding of Bach style and performance. The workshop offers intensive instruction by an internationally-recognized faculty in instrumental and vocal performance as well as baroque dance. The workshop includes private lessons, ensemble coachings, daily dance classes, lectures, and faculty and participant concerts.
